4 Steps to Restart and Reach Your Student Goals in 2017

We blinked and 2017 is off to a fast start! Suddenly, our San Marino tutors are no longer preparing for holidays and winter break but instead planning for SATs, ACTs, and school tours.

There is no better time than the beginning of a new year to take “inventory” and assess what is working and what could use a tune-up.

According to a recent survey, just 9.2 percent of people will succeed in achieving their New Year’s resolution. That’s why, rather than making a resolution, we suggest taking the opportunity to “reset.” This means something different to everyone, but there are a few key steps you can take to determine where you are with your student goals, what is driving you closer to them, and what is keeping them at bay.

  1. Get ready. It may sound simple, but taking time to clean out your backpack is step number one! This will allow you to truly start fresh. Begin by sorting your papers and removing anything you don’t need to be carrying with you to and from school. Then, organize what’s left. Restock your supplies and try to get some of that “first day back to school” excitement back!

  1. Set goals. During this step, take a moment to think about where you’ve been doing well and where you’ve been struggling. Prioritize a few goals. These should be “SMART” goals—meaning they are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-specific.

  1. Anticipate your obstacles. For each goal, think about what’s been getting in your way. What barriers have been preventing you from reaching success? Outline a plan to overcome those issues and if you need help planning, engage your parents, a counselor, or a tutor to help.

  1. Adjust. The hardest, but most crucial, step is altering your daily habits to reach your goals. Goals are what get you started, but habits are how goals are reached! Try using our handy Daily Goal Tracker to help you reach success! Simply write out your goals in the left-hand column and color in the box on the days you complete them. It might seem at first like just one more thing on your plate to do, but there is great power in coloring these little boxes in each day! Focus on your daily habits and you’ll see how quickly the big things come together.

Absolutely! Daily tracking is perhaps the most effective way to see goals get accomplished. As long as it’s in your face on a daily basis (posted in a common area or daily journal), you’ll have to face those daily decisions, those baby steps, to reach your specific goal(s). That’s where our goals are really attained – the day to day, for that “journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”.
